Devotion to the Law of the Lotus Flower Scripture, the mantra is chanted as the main practice of all forms of Nichiren Buddhism. The mantra is also known as Daimoku. The aim is to attain perfection - Enlightenment.

Namu: (Sanskrit derivation), "to devote oneself." 

Myoho: Mystic Law, universal life essence

Renge: lotus flower, representing cause and effect, karma; the lotus flower remains untainted even in a dirty pond. Likewise, our aim is to reach a state of perfection - becoming aware of our Buddhahood nature.

Kyo: sutra, the teaching of a Buddha (including the importance of sounds and vibrations).

The first among the five precepts is of non-killing

The first among the six practices is of giving

Life is an equal treasure to sages and insects alike

The taking of life is the gravest of all crimes

The ultimate purpose of Buddha's birth is to show compassion to all life

Compassion towards life is by not depriving of life, and of almsgiving
