When you are introduced to hypnotherapy for the very first time, you may be a little bit confused about what is involved. You may also be a little bit
wary about what hypnosis can do for you.
Many people initially find out about hypnosis from television entertainment or stage
hypnotism shows. A participant is “made” to do “silly” things, for instance, acting like a chicken or like a complete idiot.
Such “entertainment” shows invariably portray the hypnotist as someone having “magical” powers. The hypnotist demonstrates that he or she has complete control over the participant’s mind.
The aim of the entertainer / hypnotist is to capture audience attention, to entertain and to make money. That suits the television company perfectly – they want a slice of audience ratings and everything that goes with it (a “star” attraction, sponsorships, advertising, press coverage about their show, etc.)
Stage or TV hypnosis shows that are purely for entertainment” purposes may do a great
deal of injustice to the profession of hypnotherapy.
Such pathetic shows create myths and many misconceptions: the hypnotist has special power over your mind; he/she can make you do things against your will; he/she may play hypnotic “tricks” on your mind and you may not be able to recover even after the show has finished; etc.
Having watched "entertainment hypnosis" shows, you may be reluctant to seek a hypnotic intervention
even though your issue may be extremely debilitating. You may continue to suffer in silence.
Professional Hypnotherapy is accepted as an alternative and complementary therapy in the UK, USA and other countries.
Hypnotherapist (Hypnotist)
- The USA Department of Labor Directory of Occupational Titles, D.O.T. 079.157.010, provides this definition:
"Hypnotherapist - Induces hypnotic state in client to increase motivation or
alter behavior pattern through hypnosis. Consults with client to determine the nature of problem. Prepares client to enter hypnotic states by explaining how hypnosis works and what client will experience. Tests subject to determine degrees of physical and emotional suggestibility. Induces hypnotic state in client using individualized methods and techniques of hypnosis based on interpretation of test results and analysis of client's problem. May train client in
self-hypnosis conditioning."
Professional Hypnotherapy Works ...
I know from personal experience (having been at the receiving end of professional hypnotherapy as well as offering
advanced professional hypnotherapy to clients) that nothing could be further from the “truth” portrayed by stage
or TV entertainment shows.
Professional hypnotherapy offers amazing, life changing experiences. After your
hypnotherapy, you may continue to notice profound and wonderful changes as days
go by.
Helping others …
I developed a passion to help others because hypnosis really works.
One of the key ways of helping people is to educate them about professional hypnotherapy and to contrast this clearly with stage hypnosis.
A lot of people will continue to shy away from seeking hypnotic interventions
for "real issues" as long as they associate hypnosis with frivolous stage or TV shows. That is not to say that all TV
or stage hypnotism shows are bad for the hypnotherapy profession. There are some
exceptions to the normal "silly entertainment" hypnosis shows. In
fact, a number of wonderful stage hypnotists have provided techniques that form
a part of professional hypnotherapy training. In other words, stage or TV
hypnosis of itself doesn't do any harm - the harm is caused when thoughtless
shows portray hypnosis just as a laughing matter. That is what is likely to
prevent real people with real issues from seeking help in making a real
difference to their lives.
Perhaps such shows should carry a Health Warning: "This hypnosis show is
purely for entertainment purposes - it has nothing to do with professional
hypnotherapy."
Professional Hypnotherapy dispels common misconceptions about hypnotherapy (the stage variety type).
